master bedroom make-over

March 25, 2015

I love my new bedroom. I’m sleeping in a lovely, serene haven after months of remodeling and years of not getting around to remodeling. The soft greys and fresh clean white walls really envelope me at the end of a long day.

In the small building extension, I added about three feet to the length of the room but lost a foot in width (from the bathroom remodel). However, with the help of a few decorating tricks I was able to make the room appear bigger and added a lot more storage.

New windows and a door to the outside allow fresh air where before we were sealed in at night. Recessed lighting replaces a central hanging capiz shell fixture which, together with drapes hung as high on the wall as possible, make the ceiling feel loftier. Instead of the old mirrored sliding closet doors I was able to turn a whole wall into storage with huge floor-to-ceiling frosted glass doors.

Less curvy furniture takes up a lot less space and together with the simple color palette punctuated with pops of teal and sand, the room feels calm, organized, and spacious. A beautiful painting (by Alan’s sister, artist Christine Dale) of one of our favorite New Zealand beaches hangs by the bed and some of my photographs printed on stretched canvases reflect the colors in the room.

Did I mention I love my new bedroom?

    1. I love the soft greys and blues. It’s beautiful and looks like a great place to unwind.
