kitchen fish

Fish Lamp I was thinking about tucking a little flat screen TV somewhere in my kitchen so I could have something to watch while I cooked.  One guppy population explosion later and I am the proud owner of a tall, modern design aquarium that fits neatly in one corner under the overhead cabinets (right where I was going to put the TV).  Late at night, I turn off all of the other lights in the kitchen and the tank becomes…

jealousy map

Only the clever Julia Cameron, author of the international best seller, The Artist's Way, could turn a negative word like jealousy into a beacon of hope for creative people everywhere.  We're probably all too uncomfortably familiar with the creeping feelings of resentment, anger, disgust, and anxiety that jealousy brings along with it.  I know I am.  But Julia Cameron used those feelings to plot a very personal pathway. Some people, like my husband, don't need this sort of guidance (he…

tropical breakfast treats

I love summer fruit and I don't love dieting.  In fact, that word is banned from my house, along with deprivation. They are miserable words!  For me, the only way to eat food that allows me to look the way I want to in a swimsuit, is to make it more tasty and attractive than the cereal or toast I usually reach for.  It may take a bit of extra planning but I'm not talking about large quantities of fruit,…

paper flowers diy

I love these paper flowers. I’ve made them in all different colors and while these are perfect for July 4th, they look even better when you use colors found in nature. White petals with yellow centers are my favorites. Lay 3 napkins opened out, directly on top of each other. A contrasting smaller napkin will be the center (you can cut one to size). Cut either a spiky or wavy border around the center napkin. Lay the center (smaller napkin)…

4th of july easy dessert

We flew the flag. Cheat sheet - after the bbq, the kids loved this pretty July 4th dessert spread and I didn't need to toil in a hot kitchen all day preparing it. Store-bought star-shaped cookies and quick and easy mini pavlovas sit on big red and blue stars.  alternating blue and white napkins (I used smaller red ones for appetizers) and home-made napkin flowers set the scene. mini pavlovas - ok, so these are an Australian dessert but the…

hallway heaven

To open up this long, skinny hallway I had all of the base boards and the molding around each doorway removed. Paneled doors were replaced with a mix of plain and frosted glass-paned ones. I swapped ornate brass handles for simple chrome levers, more recessed lighting was added, large scale (24" x 24") gray matte tiles replaced the squeaky old wood veneer floors, and some fun inexpensive canvases keep the color scheme from becoming too dreary. Hallway hell!  Do I…

brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous

I started trace with the intention of sharing the many things that inspire me daily. I love this quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve…
