DIY – Kitchen Shelf Upgrade

February 11, 2016

I used our recent termite tenting as motivation to clean out my pantry (a job I’d been putting off for a while). My pull-out shelves, installed a few years back, are starting to look a bit grotty. Any spills or heat have buckled the bottoms, so the clean-out was shaping up to be less than satisfying.

A quick trip to Ikea later, I found this shelf and drawer lining material at $3.99 a roll that makes them look and feel like new again.

Once the shelf is empty and as clean as you can make it, lay the roll of lining material in place and the score the edge so you know where to trim it using scissors. I used small pieces of double-sided tape under each corner to hold the liner in place and keep it from curling.

It didn’t take too long, it’s wipe-able and fresh looking and now every shelf feels new and clean. I’ve used a grey color for my pantry but when I went back for more the only options were white or clear. I don’t want to see through to the old surface below, so white it is. I think I’m going to keep going and line all of the bedroom drawers as well.
