Palm Springs perfection

December 8, 2014

Palm Springs conjures up a cool almost intimidating vibe to people living outside of California, so when I visited the desert oasis the first couple of times, it didn’t really live up to it’s reputation. I found myself staying in sprawling Spanish-style resorts where the restaurants had closed due to lack of interest. Jaded parents watched kids dunking each other in the pool while guarding large swathes of reserved deck chairs. It just didn’t do it for me.

Last weekend however, I got a glimpse of a Palm Springs I could grow to love. My friend Ruth organized a Palm Springs extravaganza to celebrate her birthday: golf, a mid-century architectural walking tour, spa treatments, and the highlight – dancing the night away in Mad Men inspired dresses and suits at the Purple Room.

The Purple Room opened it’s doors back in 1960 and according to new owners, Tony Marchese and Mark Van Laanen: “The Purple Room at the Trinidad Resort is only one of two original Rat Pack hang outs. We updated the décor, lighting and sound system but kept the vibe as it was when Frank, Sammy, Dean and others came here.  It’s also where Frank Sinatra got engaged.”

One of my most fun nights in forever, I danced and drank and ate and laughed. Sitting in the big curved leather booths I could easily imagine the Rat Pack hanging out there.

We stayed right next door at the newly remodeled (and very colorful) Sagauro Hotel, a fun option if you don’t want to drop a bomb on accommodation.

Of course I love the mid-century style of Palm Springs and now, the night life is starting to hook me too. Happy Birthday Ruth and see you again soon PS x.
